Borderlands movie earns just $8.8 million in its opening weekend
The film adaptation of Gearbox's Borderlands franchise has bombed at the North American box office, grossing only $8.8 million in its first weekend, with even worse results in international markets.
The details:
As reported by Variety, the film grossed $4 million on its opening day in 3125 locations across North America, which included increased ticket sales from Imax and "other premium large-format auditoriums."
The rest of the opening weekend was also unsuccessful, grossing $8.8 million, trailing Twisters, which earned $15.4 million in its fourth weekend, and falling even further behind blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $54.2 million in its third weekend.
Variety reported that international performance was even weaker, bringing in only $7.7 million for a total of $16.5 million globally. The publication notes that Lionsgate has "financially shielded itself" as international pre-sales recouped nearly 60% of its production costs, which totaled $115 million, but the overall performance still remains embarrassingly poor.
Regarding its critical performance, the film has risen to the top of many lists as the worst film of 2024. Borderlands had a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes until a handful of positive reviews boosted it to a slightly improved 9%. Despite the improvement, it appears that the majority of the reviews are from people who have never played the game series but instead were drawn in by its star-studded cast, particularly Cate Blanchett.
