After over a decade, narrative designer and game director Carrie Patel has announced that she is leaving Obsidian Entertainment to join Netflix-owned Oxenfree developer Night School Studio.

The details:

  • Patel announced her departure on LinkedIn, confirming that she is now the game director at Night School. It is currently unknown what Patel and the rest of the studio are working on, as it has only released a sequel to Oxenfree and mobile title Black Mirror: Thronglets since Netflix acquired the developer in 2021.

  • Patel joined Obsidian in November 2013 as a narrative designer for the Pillars of Eternity series and The Outer Worlds, before being promoted to game director for the latter's Peril on Gorgon DLC followed by Avowed. Avowed received generally positive reviews, with Patel hinting in an interview with Eurogamer that more could come from the new IP in the future. "Now that we've built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I'd love to see us do more with it," she said.

  • Netflix's plans to expand into the gaming space have changed drastically over the years. When it first acquired Night School in 2021, the streaming giant was focused on mobile games before establishing a new studio with Halo veteran Joseph Staten, God of War art director Rafael Grassetti, and Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny, which closed its doors last year. Netflix also confirmed that it had laid off an undisclosed number of Night School employees earlier this year, which reportedly surprised those affected.
