Author behind the Metro series sentenced to 8 years in prison after denouncing Russo-Ukrainian war

Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the Metro series of novels that were later adapted into games, was reportedly sentenced to eight years in prison by a Moscow court for posting "fake" information about Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The details:

• As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Glukhovsky was tried in absentia because he is not currently in Russia, and he was sentenced to eight years in prison for spreading "fake" information about the war, directly contradicting the Russian government's narrative. The ruling is the result of a bill passed after the invasion that made "disinformation" illegal, punishable by up to 15 years in prison for those who commit the "crime.”
• The author wrote in April 2022, just months after the invasion began and after he had already left Russia, that the conflict "unleashed by Putin is becoming more terrible and inhumane by the day, and the pretexts under which it was launched look increasingly insignificant and false." For his anti-Kremlin views, he was later labeled a "foreign agent" by the government in October 2022.
• Following the ruling, the author uploaded a photo to Instagram with the caption "Not caught - not a thief ;)" and can be seen relaxing on a boat or somewhere near the ocean. Previous Instagram posts indicate that he has been traveling around the world over the last year, with posts from Jerusalem and Italy.
• Beginning with Metro 2033, Glukhovsky's works have been adapted into the Metro game franchise. He previously stated that he was working on the story for the next release, which could be revealed by developer 4A Games later this month at Gamescom.
