Reports out of South Korea suggest Nintendo is considering an OLED version of the Switch 2, with Samsung actively lobbying to supply the displays. The rumour comes from ZDNET Korea and has been picked up by multiple outlets, though no agreement has been reached and the project is far from confirmed.

The details:

  • Samsung is reportedly pushing Nintendo to adopt an OLED panel for a Switch 2 revision, with ZDNET Korea claiming product development could begin before the end of 2026 if a deal is struck. Mass production would follow in 2027 at the earliest, with a consumer launch not expected before late 2027 or early 2028.
  • The proposed screen would be a step up to Full HD resolution (1920x1080), compared to the HD (1280x720) panel in the original Switch OLED model.
  • The main obstacle is cost. Nintendo is actively trying to reduce manufacturing expenses amid ongoing component price pressures, and OLED panels carry a meaningful premium over LCD. No deal has been confirmed, and Nintendo has not commented.
  • The Switch 2 launched in March 2026 with an LCD screen and has sold strongly. Nintendo has followed this exact playbook before: the original Switch received an OLED revision three and a half years after launch.
  • The rumour arrives as the Switch 2 is already performing well commercially, giving Nintendo less immediate pressure to accelerate a hardware revision.
