Take-Two Interactive subpoenas Microsoft and Discord in hunt for GTA 6 leaker

Take-Two Interactive subpoenas Microsoft and Discord in hunt for GTA 6 leaker
Rockstar Games

Take-Two Interactive has filed subpoena requests with the Southern District of New York seeking a sweeping trove of user data from both Microsoft and Discord as it works to unmask "Cyberleek," the individual or group responsible for an ongoing spree of GTA 6 gameplay leaks. The legal manoeuvring escalates what has become one of the most high-profile leak situations in gaming history, with new footage continuing to surface despite the company's best efforts.

The details:

  • The subpoenas were filed on August 20 and give both Microsoft and Discord until September 4 to comply. The requests are extensive. Microsoft is being asked to hand over all internal investigation records tied to the "cyberleek" persona, plus account IDs, registration emails, IP addresses, device identifiers, and any OneDrive content related to GTA, Rockstar, or Cyberleek from users in specified Discord servers. Discord faces a similar request across multiple servers.
  • The named Discord servers include CYBERLEEK, CINEMATICROCKSTAR, servers tied to the handles "Surfer24k" and its replacements "cyberleek_west" and "surwest," Ødyssey.gg, and the "DarkViperAU editors' server." That last inclusion surprised streamer Matthew "Matt" Judge, known as DarkViperAU, who confirmed on X that he had no knowledge of the leaks. "I don't know anything," he wrote. "Rockstar hasn't emailed me."
  • Cyberleek has now posted at least eight clips of what appears to be genuine GTA 6 gameplay, revealing new mechanics, locations, and features ahead of the game's November 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The group operates from a site hosting a manifesto calling out digital pre-orders and "fake" DLC, but the same site pushes a crypto meme coin, leading many to conclude the leaks are at least partly a financial scheme.
  • Rockstar Games has not publicly confirmed the authenticity of any of the leaked footage and has yet to comment on the subpoenas. According to reports, the studio does not yet know the identity of the leaker or how the material was obtained.
