Miyazaki says The Duskbloods isn't a strategy shift and FromSoftware still wants to make single-player games

In a new IGN interview, FromSoftware president and Duskbloods director Hidetaka Miyazaki pushed back on the idea that two consecutive multiplayer titles signal a new direction for the studio, and revealed a wealth of new detail about how The Duskbloods actually plays.

The details:

  • On the release Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods (via IGN): "The fact that the two projects happened at the same time was simply a coincidence. It's not like our strategy has changed and we're now going to primarily focus on making online games." He added that working on multiplayer "scratches that itch, only to want to make something single-player again."
  • On the PvPvE label: Miyazaki said calling it PvPvE in the announcement "may not have been entirely accurate," as it leads people to picture an extraction shooter. The game is structured differently, with players earning Virtue points across four phases. Pure combat skill is just one route to victory.
  • On accessibility: the Virtue system is deliberately designed so that positioning, strategy, and role-playing can substitute for raw mechanical skill. Miyazaki said even he, someone who doesn't consider himself highly skilled at action games, can enjoy it.
  • The playable characters are called "Bloodsworn" rather than vampires by design. Miyazaki described them as "a race with intelligence, philosophy, culture, and history, rather than simply monsters."
  • The full release will have well over 10 playable character types across three maps, each set in a different historical "dusk" where humanity faces decline. The network test features one Gothic Victorian map. Ranked matches, leaderboards, and a seasonal system are planned.
  • Single-player mode is described as "fairly minimal," primarily for maintenance windows when servers are down. However, the game does have multiple story endings driven by online play and NPC interactions at the hub.
