Xbox President Sarah Bond has confirmed that Microsoft is actively developing next-generation hardware, putting to rest recent speculation that the company might be exiting the console business.

The details:

  • In an interview with Variety, Bond stated that Xbox has "next-gen hardware in development" and emphasized the company's commitment to providing options for "power players who want the latest innovations" in gaming technology. "We are 100 percent looking at making things in the future," said Bond. "We have our next-gen hardware in development. We've been looking at prototyping, designing. We have a partnership we've announced with AMD around it, so that is coming. What we saw here was an opportunity to innovate in a new way and to bring gamers another choice, in addition to our next-gen hardware. We are always listening to what players and creators want. When there is demand for innovation, we're going to build it."
  • Microsoft announced a strategic partnership with AMD to develop the silicon and hardware for its upcoming console, with the company currently in the prototyping and design stages of the project. The next-generation Xbox is tentatively expected to launch around 2027 alongside its rumored first-party handheld, though no official release window has been confirmed.
  • It was previously reported that Microsoft may have been planning to leave the console hardware business, instead focusing exclusively on software and services such as Game Pass with the Xbox brand. However, the company has reaffirmed in the past that it aims to provide players with a reason to still buy its consoles going forward.
