Six years after the launch of the current generation of consoles, Activision has finally announced that the next Call of Duty title will not be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The details:

  • Last week, leaker Alaix claimed on X that the next COD game, which is expected to be Modern Warfare 4, was being tested on the PS4, suggesting that Activision was once again bringing the franchise to last-generation platforms.
  • The rumor was met with disapproval from fans as recent entries such as Black Ops 6 and this year’s Black Ops 7 have been somewhat rough on a technical level, with long load times, unstable frame rates, and noticeable graphical downgrades in order to run on aging hardware. As a result, many believe that the franchise should finally move on in order to prevent the older platforms from hindering the development of new features and content.
  • However, the official COD X account has directly addressed the rumor, confirming that Infinity Ward’s next title will not be coming to the PS4 or Xbox One, marking the end of an era. “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true,” Activision wrote. “The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.”
