Indie developer Grolaf, aka Crunchfest3, has claimed that their new roguelike game Codex Mortis was created entirely using generative AI, including its artwork, animations, and even code.

The details:

  • According to the developer, the game, which is very clearly inspired by indie hit Vampire Survivors, uses TypeScript with libraries like PIXI.js and bitECS for its foundation, with code, visuals, and animations all generated or heavily assisted by AI assistants and image models such as ChatGPT.
  • Unsurprisingly, the overall reception to the "world's first" fully AI-generated game has been rather negative. Many have highlighted that the title has several telltale marks of AI use, with its visuals appearing muddy and indistinct compared to traditional hand-crafted art. Meanwhile, others have taken aim at its claims of being the first AI-generated game, highlighting previous experiments like Doomscroll, which also used conversational models to generate code and content.
  • However, some are much more open to the project, noting that the controversial technology is already being used by studios of all sizes around the globe. Notably, Microsoft has reportedly put in place mandates to push its use, EA is allegedly pressuring staff to use AI in all areas, and over half of Japanese studios are implementing the tech in some manner.
