Valve has confirmed that its upcoming Steam Machine will be priced like a PC with similar specifications, with the company ruling out hardware subsidies that typically make PlayStation and Xbox systems more affordable at launch.

The details:

  • Speaking on the WAN Show, Linus Sebastian of Linus Tech Tips gave some insight into his recent meeting with Valve, where he was met with a disappointing reaction when discussing the pricing of its upcoming console-like "Steam Machine" PCs. "When I said, 'I'm disappointed that it isn't going to follow a console pricing model where it's subsidized by the fact that the manufacturer is going to be taking 30% of every game sold on it over the lifespan of this thing, because I feel that would be a more meaningful product,' they kind of asked what I meant by, well, 'What do you mean by console price?' And I said, 'Well, $500,'" Sebastian said. "Nobody said anything, but the energy of the room wasn't great."
  • Valve has also confirmed that the system will not be subsidized. Speaking on Skill Up’s Friends Per Second podcast, Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais stated the Steam Machine will be "priced like a PC, rather than like a console," targeting a price point comparable to equivalently powerful gaming PCs.
  • However, Griffais made it clear that there is still no set pricing in place, citing tariffs and rapidly increasing RAM costs as some reasons why its plans could change. Despite this, the company still aims to create a system capable of 4K 60FPS gaming with the assistance of DLSS, giving players the opportunity to easily access their PC gaming library in the comfort of their living room.
