Valve’s new Steam Controller has a hidden Easter egg that makes it play the iconic Wilhelm scream when dropped under certain conditions.

The details:

  • The discovery was first made by Reddit user RF3D19, and subsequent testing confirmed that the controller can produce the famous scream effect if dropped from a height of more than three feet while Steam is in Big Picture mode.
  • Because the controller lacks an in-built speaker, the effect appears to be produced by the device's haptic motors, similar to how the Nintendo Switch Pro controller can produce sounds via vibrations. The sound will also not play continuously, with approximately a minute of cooldown time between drops.
  • The Wilhelm scream is one of cinema's most iconic stock sounds, appearing in countless video games, movies, and television shows such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Red Dead Redemption.
