Splash Damage, a UK-based studio best known for games such as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Dirty Bomb, and Gears Tactics, has officially broken away from Tencent following a buyout from private-equity investors.

The details:

  • As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the developer confirmed the split in a statement provided to the publication, sharing that it had been sold to a group of unnamed private equity investors. Despite the change in ownership, it has clarified that there are no changes being made to its current leadership team and that it would "not be providing further comment at this time."
  • Splash Damage, founded in 2001, rose to prominence with the release of its popular multiplayer FPS Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory in 2003. The studio went on to support popular franchises like Gears of War and Batman: Arkham, primarily focused on multiplayer modes, while also developing their own titles like Brink and Dirty Bomb.
  • The studio was then acquired by the Hong Kong-based Leyou Technology Holdings in 2016, which itself was bought out by Chinese gaming giant Tencent for $1.3 billion USD in 2020. As of 2023, it was working on the now-cancelled Transformers: Reactivate, as well as Project Astrid, an open-world survival game being developed with the assistance of popular content creators Sacriel and Shroud.
