The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) has announced that its curated digital library will be made available to the public at the end of January, providing access to a large catalog of magazines, artwork, promotional kits, and other rare materials.

The details:

  • The library will launch on January 30, with more information coming soon. "After years of collecting, cataloging, and digitizing video game history materials, the VGHF is finally opening the virtual doors to its library—wherever you are," the Foundation said in a statement to VGC. The foundation also shared new high-quality scans of Donkey Kong and Final Fantasy VII artwork.

  • VGHF has confirmed that the collection will include "never-before-seen game development materials," as well as high-resolution artwork and press and promotional kits for popular games. It will also house over 1,500 out-of-print video game magazines which are all text-searchable.

  • The library project was originally announced in 2023, although it has been in the works since 2021. As a non-profit, the VGHF relies on donations to expand its collections, with the goal of preserving as much video game history as possible. However, the VGHF has struggled to obtain legal permission to preserve games themselves, with the US Copyright Office choosing to deny the Software Preservation Network's request to allow researchers to remotely access games from libraries and archives, even if they are no longer officially available.
