Amazon's Prime Video adaptation of God of War is recasting its lead role after Ryan Hurst suffered a serious bicep tear while performing a stunt in late June. The injury requires a recovery timeline that extends well beyond the show's production schedule, forcing the decision to bring in a new actor to play Kratos.

The details:

  • As reported by Deadline, Hurst tore his bicep during a stunt on set, an injury that requires extensive rehabilitation. He will not be cleared to return to the physical demands of the role until 2027, which is incompatible with the show's planned shoot.
  • Four episodes had been fully completed at the time of the injury. All four will be reshot with the incoming replacement actor. Prep for the new production is expected to begin in mid-August, with filming resuming in mid-October.
  • Hurst had committed significantly to the physical transformation required for the role, putting on 40 pounds of muscle in preparation for playing the God of War. No replacement has been publicly named.
  • The series is a live-action adaptation of Sony's PlayStation franchise, produced for Amazon Prime Video. No release window has been announced.
