Take-Two Interactive issues DMCA takedowns on leaked GTA 6 footage
Rockstar Games

Rockstar's parent company Take-Two Interactive has spent the past day aggressively issuing DMCA takedown notices against leaked GTA 6 gameplay footage that surfaced on August 18, and in doing so has all but confirmed the videos are genuine. The catch: the footage appears to be years old.

The details:

  • The leaker stated his motivation was that GTA 6 will be a digital-only release, framing the leak as a protest against the move away from physical media.
  • Metadata from the leaked videos suggests the footage dates from 2023 or earlier, meaning it is old development footage rather than a current build. The game's visual quality in the clips is lower than what you would expect from a title releasing in the coming months.
  • Despite the footage being old, Take-Two's swift and aggressive DMCA response is widely being read as confirmation the videos are authentic. The company has not commented publicly.
  • GTA 6 will be shown in a Netflix special on August 27, which is expected to include recent gameplay. Insider Gaming understands that press previews are also underway, which may explain why some outlets and creators did not cover the leaks.
  • The leaker has threatened further leaks targeting other developers and publishers, though it is unclear whether this is a genuine threat or an attempt to capitalise on the attention.
