Subnautica 2 surpasses two million sales following its early access release

Just a day after launching into early access, Subnautica 2 has already been a massive success, with high concurrent player counts and surpassing two million copies sold.

The details:

  • After a lengthy legal battle with publisher Krafton, Unknown Worlds finally released the early access version of Subnautica 2 on PC on May 14. Within a day of its launch, it has already peaked at 467,582 concurrent players on Steam alone, a figure that is expected to be surpassed over the weekend. This is a huge increase compared to its predecessors, with the original Subnautica and Below Zero having reached lifetime peaks of 51,156 and 42,115 players, respectively.
  • Shortly after release, the Subnautica X account announced that it had sold over one million copies, which was later followed by another announcement confirming that two million had been sold within just 12 hours. The game is currently only available on PC but is also playable via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Game Pass PC.
  • The release is excellent news for developer Unknown Worlds, as publisher Krafton is now expected to pay out a $250 million bonus to the game’s development team due to the success of the early access launch. The bonus was the center of a lawsuit between Unknown Worlds and now-reinstated leadership, where it was claimed that the company allegedly attempted to avoid paying it by simply firing three of its top executives and delaying the title.
