Shift Up, the developer behind Stellar Blade, has announced that it is acquiring UNBOUND, a studio founded by Resident Evil creator and gaming veteran Shinji Mikami in 2022.

The details:

  • As confirmed via a new blog post, the acquisition aims to "strengthen [Shift Up’s] global PC and console publishing capabilities with Unbound's upcoming titles. "Details of the acquisition are unknown, including the total cost of the deal, but Shift Up notes that it will allow it to expand the company with “world class” talent.
  • Unbound is currently said to be creating a “fairly large” game that the studio aims to be able to call a masterpiece in the future. “I grew up playing games from Shinji Mikami,” Shift Up CEO Hyung-Tae Kim said regarding the deal. “And to be here now working together is incredibly meaningful.”
  • Mikami founded Unbound in 2022, but the studio began operations following their public exit from their previous company Tango Gameworks, which was shut down and later reopened when acquired by Krafton. "I am very pleased to be partnering with Hyung-Tae Kim and all the employees,” Mikami said. “I sense strong synergy with Kim, who is also an active creator, and I believe this is an ideal partnership that allows us to focus on creativity. We will do our best to create fun games so that both companies, working as one, can meet our fans' expectations."
