Sony has recorded a $765 million impairment loss on Bungie after underperformance from Destiny 2 and its new extraction shooter Marathon but says it still believes in the game and is not pulling the plug like it did with Concord.

The details:

  • In its latest fiscal report, Sony’s Game & Network Services segment recorded impairment losses of 120.1 billion JPY (around $765 million USD) against Bungie’s intangible and other assets, effectively writing down part of the value of the $3.6 billion acquisition that took place in 2022.
  • Sony has highlighted Marathon’s positive review scores and states that retention is “at a high level" and says it plans to improve its commercial performance by adding content, refining gameplay, and expanding the user base rather than outright dropping support.
  • Destiny 2’s player counts and spending have continued to trend well below expectations since the launch of its 2024 expansion The Final Shape. Meanwhile, Marathon, which reportedly cost over $200 million to develop, has struggled to grow its audience to the size expected by PlayStation prior to its release in March.
