Sega has acknowledged that, while fans generally have a negative attitude toward AI's use in game development, it will only implement the technology where it is deemed appropriate to assist in the creation of new games.

The details:

  • In a Q&A following the company’s latest earnings report, Sega confirmed that it plans to implement AI into its development workflows to make the process more efficient in an attempt to tackle increasing costs. However, it clarified that due to “strong resistance” against generative AI in gaming, it will "proceed by carefully assessing appropriate use cases," rather than going all in on the controversial technology.
  • Many companies, such as EA, Activision Blizzard, and Take-Two, have confirmed that they are investing heavily into AI, with reports from several major publishers claiming that staff are being forced to use and train algorithms with their own work due to mandates despite pushback from employees.
  • A recent study from Tokyo Game Show organizer Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) revealed that over half of its Japanese development partners are using AI during development. Meanwhile, some companies are concerned about the increasing usage of the tech, primarily in art, with Japanese news outlet Daily Shinko revealing that an unnamed game studio now requires job applicants to draw something during an interview in order to prove they do not use generative AI.
