PlayStation has confirmed that Dark Outlaw Games, a first-party studio founded by former Treyarch veteran Jason Blundell in 2025, has closed its doors amid company-wide cost-cutting measures.

The details:

  • As first reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier via Bluesky, the studio has now been shut down alongside layoffs affecting "around 50 people” in the US and UK, and Sony is now planning to move away from the mobile gaming market entirely aside from supporting titles it announced in the past.
  • Sony has now officially confirmed the cuts in a statement to PC Gamer, explaining that it had made "several strategic adjustments to support long-term sustainability." "As part of this process, there were limited workforce reductions across select teams. We greatly appreciate the contributions of all those impacted,” the company spokesperson said.
  • Following his departure from Activision, Call of Duty Zombies legend Blundell formed Deviation Games under PlayStation in 2020 alongside long-time collaborator Dave Anthony, which he would later leave in 2022, with the studio being closed in March 2024. A year later, he announced the formation of Dark Outlaw, once again under Sony, which was working on an undisclosed project.
