New footage has shown that the Nintendo Switch 2's new GameChat feature will include a number of accessibility features to help players communicate.

The details:

  • As spotted by OatmealDome on Bluesky, new footage of GameChat shows that players will be able to type messages using the console's on-screen virtual keyboard and have the system read them to other users. It is unclear whether the Switch 2 will support external keyboards for faster typing, but given that its predecessor accepted USB keyboard inputs, it is very likely.

  • GameChat will also offer live captioning, allowing people who are hard of hearing to use the feature. When other players speak, the console transcribes what they say and displays it in an on-screen chat box to the side of their gameplay, with each message being attributed to the user that originally said it. The video shows the Switch 2 transcribing Japanese speech, but it's unclear what other languages the feature will support at launch, though English is almost guaranteed.

  • The Switch 2’s GameChat feature is Nintendo's long-awaited voice chat system, allowing players to communicate online directly from the console without the need for a mobile app like the original Switch. The new "C" button on the Joy-Cons activates the feature, which uses the console's built-in microphone as well as an optional camera to enable voice and video chat with up to 11 others. Up to four players can also stream gameplay in the same chat session, even if they are playing different games.
