Nintendo says its recent Switch 2 price increase still doesn’t fully cover rising hardware costs and is promising a “robust” lineup of games will arrive soon to help justify the higher price tag.

The details:

  • Last week, Nintendo confirmed it will raise the price of the Switch 2 across the US, Canada, and Europe on September 1 by upwards of $50 USD. Meanwhile, Japan will see an increase much sooner, coming into effect from May 25 across all Switch 1 and 2 models. The decision is a result of rising hardware costs, with the rapid development of AI systems leading to shortages of memory and storage across the tech sector.
  • Speaking during Nintendo’s latest financial results briefing, president Shuntaro Furukawa apologized for the “considerable inconvenience and trouble” the hikes will cause, adding that the new pricing “does not fully account for all cost increases.”
  • Now, the company plans to outweigh the console’s price increase by offering “a robust software line-up to enhance the Switch 2 ownership value,” including titles such as Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Star Fox, Rhythm Heaven Groove, and Splatoon Raiders, with more to be announced.
  • Nintendo notes that recent successes such as Pokémon Pokopia have made it clear to the company that high-quality exclusives have been the main driving force for players to upgrade from the original Switch.
