Nintendo confirms the next Super Mario Bros. movie is coming in 2026
Nintendo has announced that it will once again collaborate with Illumination to produce another animated Super Mario Bros. film, scheduled for release on April 3, 2026.
The details:
Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed the news during MAR10 Day, an annual celebration of the series on March 10. “As for details of the new film, as I often say, we’ll let you know once we’re at the stage where we’re ready to share more,” Miyamoto said in the video announcement. “This time, we’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it.”
Illumination, the studio behind the previous Mario film, will return, with Universal Pictures and Nintendo co-financing the project. “Our directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and the very talented artists from Illumination Studios Paris – who brought the Mushroom Kingdom to life in The Super Mario Bros. Movie – have been busy at work, storyboarding scenes and developing set designs for new environments,” Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri said. "We start animation soon, and rest assured, we'll be obsessing over every detail to get it just right."
Meledandri then revealed that the film will be released on April 3, 2026, but no further details were shared, with Miyamoto simply stating that the companies are focusing on “broadening Mario's world further, and it'll have a bright and fun story."
