New PS5 jailbreak exploit causes price of Star Wars Racer Revenge to rise into the hundreds

Physical copies of a PS4 and PS5 port of the largely forgotten 2002 Star Wars racing game Star Wars Racer Revenge are skyrocketing in price on eBay, with some listings reaching hundreds of dollars, after reports emerged that the obscure title allows the PS5 to be jailbroken due to an exploit.

The details:

  • Despite popular belief, it has been possible to jailbreak both the PS4 and PS5 for some time, allowing players to use custom firmware, create and run unofficial games and apps, and, notably, play backed-up or pirated games. The exploit, known as "mast1c0re," uses the PS4's PS2 emulator and previously relied on the digital-only re-release of Okage: Shadow King, effectively preventing most users from ever using it unless the game was already installed on a console running 12.0 firmware or lower.
  • However, it was recently discovered that the exploit can be used with the physical release of 2002’s Star Wars Racer Revenge, as the game uses the same PS2 emulator and does not require an internet connection to install. The issue that jailbreak enthusiasts have now encountered is that the title was only released via independent publisher Limited Run Games, meaning that only a small number of copies actually exist, which likely equates to less than 10,000 globally.
  • Unsurprisingly, due to the game's scarcity and high demand, prices have skyrocketed on online storefronts over the last week. eBay listings for complete-in-box copies have shot up, with prices ranging from $20-30 to $200-300 or more. Loose discs continue to sell for as little as $50, but prices have risen as the total number of copies available declines.
