A group of employees at MindsEye developer Build a Rocket Boy have filed a new lawsuit accusing management of secretly installing surveillance software on their devices, violating their data privacy.

The details:

  • As reported by Game Developer, the group, which is backed by the IWGB Game Workers Union, claims that management admitted to installing Teramind surveillance software on employee hardware. The software was reportedly removed from the devices in March following a collective grievance against the company signed by 40 employees, but BARB's management has refused to reveal what data was collected, raising concerns about sensitive information being exposed unknowingly and how it was stored.
  • Teramind's website states that their software "helps companies track work time, enhance team productivity, and secure sensitive data while respecting privacy for both in-office and remote workers." It accomplishes this by not only taking screenshots on the device but also recording the screen, tracking keystrokes, and logging user activity.
  • News of BARB employing the use of Teramind was shared by GamesIndustry.biz in February, where it was reported that employees discovered the software through a series of Slack messages. This came after co-CEO Mark Gerhard claimed that the company had been the victim of "organized espionage and corporate sabotage" in relation to MindsEye's poorly received launch, and another lawsuit was filed by former employees accusing BARB of unfair dismissal.
