Mewgenics recoups budget in 3 hours as sales soar past 250,000 copies

Mewgenics, the long-awaited roguelike strategy game from The Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen and programmer Tyler Glaiel, has launched this week to immense success, recouping its development budget within hours and selling over a quarter of a million copies on its first day.

The details:

  • Glaiel shared a screenshot of a conversation on the platform with a fan in 2023 about the number of total sales required for Mewgenics to be considered a success in a post to X. At the time, the developer stated that 250,000 copies would be sufficient but has since revealed that this goal was achieved in just 12 hours after its release on Tuesday.
  • Glaiel also stated that the game "made back their development budget after three hours." Mewgenics was first announced in 2012 but was put on hold and eventually canceled in 2014 and 2016. However, development resumed in 2018, so while the developers have yet to reveal details of its budget, covering all costs after eight years is still an impressive feat.
  • As of the time of writing, the game has been met with universal acclaim and sits at an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam. According to SteamDB, the launch day concurrent player count reached a peak of 65,962, though this will likely be surpassed over the weekend.
