After seven years, Nintendo has finally revealed the long-awaited fourth entry in the Metroid Prime series, which will be released on the Switch next year.

The details:

  • The first gameplay trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was shown during this week's Nintendo Direct and features a familiar first-person perspective with protagonist Samus firing at alien creatures, scanning objects, and transforming into the Morph Ball.

  • Metroid Prime 4 was announced in June 2017, nearly a decade after the series' previous entry, which was released on the Wii in 2007. The 43-second trailer revealed little other than that it was in development, but Nintendo later confirmed Bandai-Namco was behind the title until 2019 when it was rebooted under Retro Studios, the series' original developer.

  • With the Switch nearing the end of its lifecycle, Nintendo stated that there would be no announcements about its successor at the Direct, but Prime 4's 2025 release date has sparked speculation that the game will be a dual launch for the next system. The company confirmed that the Switch 2 would be announced before March 2025, and based on the Switch's announcement, we could expect a release shortly after.
