Nintendo has announced "Virtual Game Cards," a new feature for the Switch and Switch 2, which will allow players to lend digital games to other users for up to two weeks.

The details:

  • During Thursday's Nintendo Direct, it was confirmed that the feature would be added to the original Switch in late April as a free system update. With the change, all digitally purchased games on the console will be converted into a "Virtual Game Card," allowing players to load and eject them as if they were physical cartridges.

  • Any cards owned on one system can be freely ejected and loaded onto another console if they are linked to the same Nintendo account. However, games can also be shared between members of the same Nintendo Account family group, albeit only temporarily. Users will be able to lend one game at a time to another player via a local wireless connection for 14 days, after which the game will be automatically returned to its original owner.

  • Nintendo has also confirmed that the feature will be included with the Switch 2 at launch. The company plans to hold another Switch 2-focused Direct on April 2, during which we will most likely see the feature integrated into the console's UI and get a closer look at the system's mysterious "C" button, which was spotted in yesterday's direct.
