Meccha Chameleon, a multiplayer hide-and-seek game developed by two indie developers in Japan at a cost of two months and sold for $4.79, has surpassed 15 million copies sold on Steam in under 25 days, making it the fastest-selling and best-selling game of 2026. The developers have celebrated the milestone by teasing a collaboration with a "famous Japanese star."

The details:

  • The game was built by creator lemorion_1224 and programmer Haganeiro, two developers who met in the Fortnite custom map creator community; it was developed over two months with no marketing budget, spreading entirely through viral Twitch clips and word of mouth
  • Players are split into hunters and chameleons; the chameleons can paint their all-white bodies to camouflage into the background, while hunters must identify and shoot anything they suspect of being a hidden player
  • Meccha Chameleon hit 1 million copies in four days, 3 million within a week, 10 million in 16 days, and 15 million in 25 days, peaking at 340,000 concurrent players on Steam
  • It has outsold every major release of the year including Resident Evil Requiem, Crimson Desert, and 007: First Light
  • The developers teased "a collaboration with a famous Japanese star next week" when announcing the 15 million milestone, though the name has not been revealed
