CyberConnect2 has announced the first entry in the .hack franchise since 2017, .hack//Z.E.R.O., marking the studio’s 30th anniversary.

The details:

  • As announced on Monday, Bandai Namco has granted CyberConnect2 permission to develop and self-publish the new title, which will be the first in nearly a decade since 2017's .hack//G.U. Last Recode, a remaster of the G.U. sub-series.
  • In an interview with Famitsu, CC2 CEO Hiroshi "Piros" Matsuyama confirmed that Z.E.R.O. will not be directly connected to previous .hack games, allowing newcomers to jump right in, and set ten years after the original titles. The game will be set once more in "The World," a fictional MMORPG that provides the player with a unique "game within a game" experience as an entirely single-player RPG presented with pseudo-multiplayer gameplay and characters designed to be viewed as fellow players.
