Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has stated that Rockstar launches games like Grand Theft Auto on consoles before PC because that’s where its “core consumer” is.

The details:

  • Speaking with Bloomberg ahead of GTA 6’s launch in November, Zelnick was asked why Rockstar continues to release its games first on consoles before waiting to bring them to PC, a trend that it has carried out for decades, with some titles such as Red Dead Redemption taking years to come to PC.
  • Despite the shrinking gap in popularity between PC and consoles, Zelnick explained that Rockstar's priority is to target the "core consumer" first. “Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that, you’re judged by serving the core,” he explained. “Like, really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn’t there, if they’re not served first and best, you kind of don’t hit your other consumers.”
  • Sony recently announced that it has acquired promotional rights for GTA 6, with all trailer footage so far captured on PS5 and PlayStation branding being prominently displayed in official marketing. Zelnick has now clarified that the console-first strategy is not tied to a deal, and the launch would still go ahead even if the partnership was not in place.
