God of War developer's new game will not be a new IP but "might feel like one," report claims
Sony

It has been reported that God of War developer Sony Santa Monica’s next title will not be a new IP but will somewhat “feel like one.”

The details:

  • Over the past year, there have been various rumors surrounding the next major project from Santa Monica Studio and veteran game director Cory Balrog following the launch of God of War Ragnarök back in 2022. This included reports that the studio was working on a new IP for the first time in 20 years after an employee mentioned the unannounced project on LinkedIn.
  • According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier on ResetEra, the developer’s next project is in fact not a new IP, nor will it be a sci-fi title as previously suggested. "I'll put it this way: it’s not a new IP but it might feel like one," Schreier wrote. "Maybe that's why people are confused. Please don't ask me more questions about this - if I wind up reporting more information at any point in the future it'll be in an article, not on a forum. And that the sci-fi stuff (that people have apparently believed for years now?) is nonsense."
  • It's currently unknown if the studio has several projects in the works or what Schreier means exactly by “it might feel like” a new IP. It’s suggested that it could be some form of major shift in style for God of War, given that the developer has exclusively worked on the franchise aside from providing assistance to other studios.
