It has been claimed that Square Enix is working on a remake of 2000’s Dragon Quest VII with a release window set for next year.
The details:
As reported by MP1st, the game will be more than a remaster of the original PS1 RPG, with Square Enix labeling it a “remake” internally, similarly to its updated versions of Dragon Quest 1–4. This suggests it will be more than a simple visual upgrade and may see changes to its gameplay, structure, or style.
It’s said that Square Enix is aiming to release the remake by the end of the 2027 fiscal year, which concludes in March 2027. However, it could be released as early as April 2026, with MP1st claiming to have seen some form of reveal teaser.
If the rumor is true, this will be the third time DQ7 has been released, first having launched on the original PlayStation in 2000. The game was later remade for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013 in Japan, with the West receiving the port in 2016 under the title Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The 3DS version saw various gameplay changes to bring it more in line with DQ11, including visible enemies instead of random encounters.
