Bruce Nesmith, a former Bethesda developer who spent 17 years at the studio before departing in 2021, has shared his perspective on a potential Morrowind remake, suggesting that revisiting the classic 2002 RPG could be a bad idea due to how outdated some of its design decisions are.

The details:

  • In a new interview with Press Box PR, Nesmith stated that he has doubts that Bethesda even retains the original source code for Morrowind, which would make a remaster or remake difficult to create compared to the 2025 remaster of its follow-up, Oblivion. "The problem with doing Morrowind is that I bet they don't have the original code," he explained. "The game is so old. I don't know if the original source code exists anymore. If it does, can you even compile it?"
  • Nesmith went on to explain that the outdated game design decisions in Morrowind may also be a roadblock for modern players. "Go back and play Morrowind and tell me that's the game you want to play again," the developer said. "We all have these fond memories of things that were pivotal moments in our gaming fantasy histories, but you go back and play a 20-year-old game, and you will cringe."
  • Itโ€™s well known that Morrowind, while loved by fans, features a Dungeons & Dragons-like dice roll combat system where poor stats and a lack of stamina can cause players to miss attacks on enemies. The RPG also lacks a modern fast travel system, and due to being built for PCs, even the UI on the Xbox version feels unintuitive compared to newer titles.
  • Rather than a traditional remake, Nesmith advocated for developing new stories set in Morrowind, High Rock, Hammerfell, and other Elder Scrolls locations that have either not been visited in a while or are only present in The Elder Scrolls Online. "If you were to completely remake Morrowind with the Skyrim engine, to try and rebuild it from the ground up, that's a whole other story, but that's an entire project,โ€ he said. โ€œThat's a whole four-year development cycle. Why not go and make something new?"
