Square Enix has confirmed that the third entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will once again be built in Unreal Engine 4, with director Naoki Hamaguchi also confirming that the undisclosed title for the project has also been “locked.”

The details:

  • Speaking with GameSpot, Hamaguchi explained that while moving to Unreal Engine 5 was considered, the team chose to remain on UE4 as it had been heavily customized throughout the development of FF7 Remake and Rebirth. He described it as “more beneficial” to keep using an engine the developers are already deeply familiar with, rather than switching to the newer engine, which would likely increase development time.
  • The team’s insistence to continue using UE4 should also make it easier to develop a port for the Nintendo Switch 2, with Square Enix confirming that the full trilogy will be available on the platform. FF7 Remake Intergrade was recently released on the Switch 2, while Rebirth is set to arrive later this year, and Part 3 could potentially launch across all platforms on the same day as Square Enix moves away from exclusive releases.
  • Hamaguchi confirmed that series creative director Tetsuya Nomura has finally decided on the title for Part 3, though it has yet to be revealed. "I remember an interview I did at Paris Games Week about how we’d narrowed it down to two [names]," Hamaguchi said. "It was up to Mr. Nomura to decide which it is. And yes, after returning from Paris Games Week, he did choose one, so I can say the title has been locked."
