Epic CEO Tim Sweeney says it "makes no sense" for platforms to tag games developed using AI

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has said he believes that it “makes no sense” for gaming storefronts to tag games that were developed with the assistance of AI.

The details:

  • Replying to a post on X stating that the labelling of AI content on platforms such as Steam “doesn’t matter anymore,” Sweeney made it clear that he agrees with the viewpoint. “Agreed,” he wrote. “The AI tag is relevant to art exhibits for authorship disclosure, and to digital content licensing marketplaces where buyers need to understand the rights situation. It makes no sense for game stores, where AI will be involved in nearly all future production.”
  • Responding to Sweeney, one user said that consumers “deserve to know” if the controversial technology was used. However, the CEO fired back, reinforcing his stance. “Why stop at AI use? We could have mandatory disclosures for what shampoo brand the developer uses. Customers deserve to know lol,” he wrote.
  • Steam has forced developers to explicitly state on their game’s store page if AI has been used in development or if there is any AI-generated content within the title since last year. This rule has led to several popular AAA games featuring variations of the AI content label, including Call of Duty and Arc Raiders.
