Discord lays off 17% of its workforce
Discord has announced the layoff of 170 employees in an effort to refocus and improve efficiency.
The details:
CEO Jason Citron announced the layoffs in a meeting and internal memo on Thursday (via The Verge). The decision will affect 170 employees from multiple departments, accounting for 17% of the company's current workforce. This is the company's largest job cut yet, with 4% of its employees being let go last summer.
According to the memo sent to employees, Discord's headcount has grown too quickly in recent years, "increasing by 5x since 2020," resulting in reduced efficiency due to additional projects. Discord has yet to achieve profitability, but The Verge believes the company is not in financial trouble.
Those who have been laid off will receive five months of salary, five months of benefit continuation, three months of outplacement services, healthcare services until the end of the year, and other benefits.
Other gaming layoffs in 2024:
Live streaming platform Twitch has confirmed that around 500 employees were laid off this week, equal to 35% of its workforce.
Unity began 2024 by confirming plans to lay off 25% of its current workforce in a company-wide restructuring by March.
