Consoles will remain the "core" of PlayStation, co-CEO says
Hideaki Nishino, PlayStation co-CEO, has stated that despite the company's ongoing push into the PC and mobile markets, consoles will remain the company's primary focus in the future.
The details:
In a recent interview with Nikkei, Nishino, head of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Platform Business Group, was asked to summarize the value of consoles in the PlayStation business. “I think that with mobile devices, there are many games that show advertisements, and PCs are difficult to set up, but with PlayStation, once you turn it on, you can experience the content you bought straight away,” he replied (translation via VGC). “The store where you purchase software also offers an intuitive experience because the products are laid out in an easy-to-understand manner. There is no doubt that consoles will be at the core of our business, but by offering titles for platforms other than consoles, we will reach a wider range of customers.”
Last year, SIE studio business group leader Hermen Hulst stated that the company intends to release its live-service titles, including Helldivers 2 and the recently closed Concord, simultaneously on PC and consoles. However, its single-player narrative games, including Marvel's Spider-Man, will be released on console first, with exclusives like God of War Ragnarök and Final Fantasy XVI arriving on PC more than a year after their PS5 releases.
While its main rival, Xbox, has made significant investments in its multiplatform strategy over the last decade, PlayStation has been slower to adopt cloud streaming and a Game Pass-style subscription. Despite this slow start, it has made significant progress in recent years, offering three PlayStation Plus tiers with a large game library and an impressive 4K streaming feature. Still, its expansion to PC lags far behind Xbox's shared Game Pass releases via the Microsoft Store.
