Compulsion Games is pitching for co-development work just one week after going independent from Xbox

South of Midnight developer Compulsion Games has put out a public call for co-development work, just one week after being spun out as an independent studio following Microsoft's sweeping Xbox restructuring. The studio posted to LinkedIn that it is "expanding opportunities to collaborate with studios across the games and entertainment industry."

The details:

  • Compulsion Games was among the studios cut loose in Xbox's July 6 restructuring, returning to independent status alongside Double Fine Productions. Unlike Ninja Theory and Undead Labs, which were sold, Compulsion retained ownership of its IP and games catalogue.
  • Just seven days after the announcement, the studio posted publicly on LinkedIn that it is open to co-development partnerships, signalling an immediate need to find work to sustain the team.
  • South of Midnight, Compulsion's most recent release, received strong critical praise but did not perform well commercially, leaving the studio without a clear financial runway as an independent.
  • Reports indicate some Compulsion employees had already begun quietly looking for new jobs ahead of the independence announcement, reportedly with the blessing of studio leadership, suggesting the team is aware of the precarious situation.
  • The move to independence does give Compulsion full control over its IP, meaning any future projects, including a potential return to the South of Midnight world, would belong entirely to the studio.
