Activision has confirmed that it will no longer release Call of Duty games from the same sub-franchise two years in a row as it aims to improve the overall quality of each yearly release.

The details:

  • In a new blog post, the publisher addressed common fan complaints regarding Black Ops 7, explaining its plans going forward with the popular FPS series. The company confirmed that there will no longer be back-to-back releases in the Black Ops or Modern Warfare series, with the past four titles consisting of Modern Warfare 2 and 3 and Black Ops 6 and 7.
  • Going forward, it plans to release “absolutely unique” games, though its annual release cycle will continue. With COD’s main developers consisting of three studios, Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Sledgehammer Games, this will provide each team more time to create high-quality titles. “We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental. While we aren’t sharing those plans today, we look forward to doing so when the time is right,” the post reads.
  • Activision also addressed the mixed reception to Black Ops 7 amid weak sales, requesting fans give it a chance, explaining that it will heavily support its post-launch cycle. The game’s Multiplayer and Zombies modes will also be free to play for the weekend, accompanied by permanent double XP. “With respect to Black Ops 7, we set our sights to deliver a spiritual successor to Black Ops 2, and the studios have poured their passion into making a great game that all of us are very proud of,” the COD team wrote. “But it’s one thing for us to say it, more importantly it’s up to you to try it and judge for yourselves.”
