Nexon reportedly working on a StarCraft shooter with Blizzard

It has been reported that South Korean developer and publisher Nexon is reviving Blizzard's iconic StarCraft franchise as a shooter following a partnership between the two companies.

The details:

  • According to Korean news outlet dnews (via ResetEra), "industry sources" have confirmed that the game is now in “full-scale development” at Nexon, with the developer hiring key talent for a new team to work on the title. It’s said that the project is under the company’s shooter division, which houses popular FPS Sudden Attack, and it has hired Choi Jun-ho, a highly regarded StarCraft modder, as a “lead planner.”
  • In 2024, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier revealed to IGN that Blizzard was in the process of reviving the StarCraft IP as a shooter, with former Far Cry lead Dan Hay reportedly overseeing the project. Not much else is known, but it is rumored that an official announcement regarding the title will be made at BlizzCon, which is set to take place in September.
  • If true, this is now Blizzard’s third attempt to create a StarCraft shooter. The first project, StarCraft Ghost, was quietly canned following its announcement in 2002, and an unfinished build was later leaked online in 2020. The second title, codenamed Project Ares, was scrapped in 2019 after two years of development in order to focus on the development of the then-upcoming Diablo IV and Overwatch 2.
