Bethesda has once again addressed fan requests for cross-platform play in Fallout 76, confirming that while the team is actively exploring implementing the feature, there are some major technical hurdles.

The details:

  • In a recent interview with Polygon, Fallout 76 creative director Jon Rush shared that the studio was in the process of researching what would be required in order to implement crossplay but stressed that it is not in its immediate plans. “We are looking into it, and we have plans to try to scope out what that work is going to entail for us,” he said. “It’s just not in the immediate plans for us. We know players want it.”
  • Production director Bill LaCoste went on to explain that adding crossplay would involve passing “huge technical hurdles” that are normally handled before a game ships. He noted that the now-seven-year-old RPG would need to be reworked to change how servers, accounts, entitlements, purchases, and in-game currencies are handled across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
  • With Amazon’s Fallout TV adaptation bringing new levels of popularity to the franchise, Fallout 76 is set to receive significant updates in the near future that add more depth to the game as a whole. Despite this, crossplay and cross-progression have remained the two most requested features from fans, as most high-profile multiplayer titles in recent years have offered players the ability to play with all platforms.
