Banjo: Recompiled

Rare's beloved Nintendo 64 platformer, Banjo-Kazooie, now has an unofficial native PC port thanks to a team of fans. The project, called Banjo: Recompiled, successfully reverse-engineered the original game and is available to download right now.

The details:

  • Banjo: Recompiled was created using code from the original game, allowing the team of volunteer developers to introduce a number of new features, including uncapped framerates, widescreen and ultrawide support, and instant load times between areas. The port is playable on Windows, Mac, and Linux and can be downloaded for free, although players will need to legally acquire a copy of the North American 1.0 version of the game by dumping an original N64 cartridge.
  • The PC port includes a deeper settings menu and mod support, allowing players to change graphics, audio, and control settings and create custom content. It also features a new dual-analogue camera system, allowing for a more modern control scheme compared to the original title, which catered towards the strange single-stick N64 controller.
  • Similar projects have been released in the past, including recompiled ports of Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Star Fox 64, which have been viewed as the best way to play the older games on modern hardware. While Nintendo has re-released the titles via Switch Online, there are many notable emulation issues, and the native fan ports have avoided legal action, as they require legal copies of the game.
