Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani has explained that the studio has no intention of developing a standalone sequel to Helldivers 2 and will continue to improve the existing title.

The details:

  • As reported by GamesRadar, Jorjani took to the official Helldivers 2 Discord server to share some insight into Arrowhead’s future plans for the series. Surprisingly, he confirmed that the studio aims to turn Helldivers 2 into a “forever game” rather than creating a new sequel, stating that there are “no plans” for a follow-up.
  • Explaining what he meant by continuing the development of the game, Jorjani told fans to "think RuneScape." Originally released in 2001, RuneScape has become one of the biggest MMOs of all time and has never had a standalone sequel. Instead, the game has gone through several iterations with changes to its engine and gameplay systems, creating distinguishable “eras” such as 2007’s RuneScape 2 (later relaunched as Old School) and the modern RuneScape 3.
  • However, Jorjani added that the plans are on the table “assuming we get a grip on performance and dev practices,” highlighting Helldivers 2’s ongoing technical issues. With the addition of new content since its launch last year, the game’s rating on Steam has recently dropped to “Mixed” due to a wave of reviews from its recent patch reporting several major performance issues. This includes crashes, disconnects, and poor frame rates, with some players referring to it as “unplayable.”
