Microsoft has begun testing an ad-supported tier of Xbox Cloud Gaming with a group of Xbox Insiders. The model is simple: watch two minutes of adverts, get one hour of free cloud streaming. It is the first time Xbox has publicly explored an advertising-funded path into game streaming, and marks a notable shift in how the platform is thinking about accessibility and monetisation.
The details:
- Participants in the test watch a two-minute block of multiple ads before entering the cloud streaming queue. Sessions are capped at one hour per run, with ads appearing only before play begins and not during it.
- Eligible titles include games players already own in their library, such as Forza Horizon 6 and 007 First Light, as well as free-to-play titles like Call of Duty: Warzone, Genshin Impact, and War Thunder that require no purchase to access.
- The test is limited to Xbox Insiders. Existing Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Cloud Gaming subscribers are unaffected and will not see ads. Microsoft has described participation as entirely optional.
- Xbox confirmed the test on Xbox Wire, framing it as a "test and learn" exercise. No timeline for a broader rollout or commercial launch has been given.
- The move comes as Xbox continues to expand its non-hardware business following its recent restructuring. An ad-supported tier would dramatically lower the barrier to cloud gaming for players without a subscription, while opening a new revenue stream through advertisers.
