Following rumors of the game's possible cancellation, Vinit Agarwal, the director of the long-awaited multiplayer The Last of Us project, has confirmed that the game is still in development.

Agarwal ended a post on his personal X account about completing Super Mario Bros. Wonder with "And so this tweet can live on in peace... yes, I'm still working on that game," dispelling rumors that it may be dead in the water.
Previous reports on the project claimed that Naughty Dog had drastically scaled back the game after Destiny studio Bungie's internal review of its development was generally negative, with the studio questioning whether the title would keep players engaged for longer periods. This reportedly resulted in developers being moved away from the project, putting the game in danger of being canceled entirely.
Ahead of the reports in May, Naughty Dog issued a statement confirming that it would require more development time, but after the studio laid off several contract employees and the project's principal monetization designer left his position, it's looking less likely that it'll be released soon, if at all.
