Tekken 8 will feature crossplay and rollback netcode

Tekken 8’s director, Katsuhiro Harada, has confirmed that the upcoming fighting game will receive crossplay across all platforms as well as "rollback netcode."

The details:

• Responding to fans on Twitter, series veteran Harada stated that crossplay would be available in Tekken 8 at launch and that he had proposed the feature for previous generation consoles. However, it was never added since Microsoft and Sony were "at odds with each other over their mutual interests" and had repeatedly refused to add the feature due to P2P security concerns. It will be a current-gen exclusive, which means it will only be available on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with crossplay most likely available across all three platforms.
• Rollback netcode is another feature that Tekken fans have been asking for for a long time, as it alleviates the feeling of being hampered by latency issues when playing online, and it is “already installed” according to Harada. The feature enables the game to predict an opposing player's moves before the necessary data is received from another client or server and then adjusts gameplay based on its accuracy, avoiding the feeling of input delay that players would experience when dealing with standard online play.
• Although fighting game fans have requested that rollback netcode be included because it provides a smoother gameplay experience, some of the genre's biggest titles, such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, do not include the system, but more are beginning to adopt it, such as Street Fighter 6 or Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, which received rollback six years after release. Crossplay is also becoming more common in all multiplayer games, with developers and publishers recognizing that allowing players to play together regardless of the platform can bring more people to a game if they don't require specific hardware, with Call of Duty's Warzone mode being a massive hit during the COVID-19 pandemic as friends and family could squad up across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
