Sony president believes Bungie needs to assume more “accountability for its development timelines”
Bungie

Hiroki Totoki, Sony president and soon-to-be PlayStation interim CEO commented on Bungie in a recent Q&A session, stating that the studio could be more responsible with its project resources.

The details:

  • Following Sony's recent financial report, Totoki was asked about Bungie and whether any plans are in place for the Destiny developer. The president stated that he met with the studio's management during a visit to its offices and that while its developers were "highly motivated, showing great creativity," there were noticeable areas for improvement, such as the "use of business expenses and assuming accountability for development timelines."

  • The studio is currently working on the final expansion to the current Destiny saga, The Final Shape, as well as Marathon, an extraction shooter reboot. Last year, it was confirmed that The Final Shape would be delayed from February 2024 to June 2024, but no comment was made on rumors of Marathon's internal delay.

  • Bungie had a rough 2023, with major layoffs affecting 8% of its workforce, including studio veterans such as Destiny and former Halo composer Michael Salvatori. Following the layoffs, it was reported that the studio's independence under Sony could be lost due to poor financial results, with the possibility of the board being dissolved completely.
