It has been claimed that Sony is currently working on a PlayStation 6 handheld console that can be docked similar to the Nintendo Switch.

The details:

  • According to Moore's Law Is Dead, a YouTube channel that has shared several accurate leaks involving past PlayStation hardware, the “PS6 handheld” will arrive alongside a standard PS6 console. It’s said that the claim is based on multiple documents from PlayStation’s graphics partner AMD, with it explicitly stating that the system will be able to be docked.
  • MLiD states that the console will offer more power than the original 2020 PS5 when docked, with the system containing an AMD APU complete with four Zen 6c cores and an additional two cores focused on system-related tasks. It’s said that the handheld may be priced at $500, with a release in late 2027.
  • Sony’s last attempt at a true handheld console was with the PS Vita in 2011, which was seen as a commercial failure. Despite sporting some impressive hardware, the system’s price tag and expensive proprietary memory card priced many potential buyers out of the platform, causing Sony to leave the market behind. Since then, it launched the cloud-only PlayStation Portal in 2023, which requires a PS5 console to use.
