Sega and Universal are reportedly working on a film based on Sega’s classic Shinobi series, which began in 1987.

The details:

  • As reported by Deadline, Sam Hargrave, best known for directing the Netflix original films Extraction and its sequel, will direct the film, with Sunny and Move On writer Ken Kobayashi working on the screenplay. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, who produced Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and La La Land, respectively, have also signed on as producers.

  • No details about the film have been revealed yet, but it will most likely center on series protagonist Joe Musashi, a modern-day ninja tasked with bringing down the Zeed crime syndicate after it attempts to plunge Japan back into a series of civil wars reminiscent of the Sengoku period.

  • The Shinobi series began in 1987 with the original arcade game, which was followed by a number of arcade and home console sequels and spinoffs. While 2011's Shinobi 3D is the franchise's latest title, Sega has confirmed that a new entry is in the works as one of its classic reboots, alongside Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, and others, indicating that the film may coincide with its release.

  • Sega has had some cinematic success with its adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog, with the third installment set to be released in December starring Keanu Reeves as Shadow. Universal also collaborated with Sega's former rivals, Nintendo, on last year's Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is currently the fourth highest-grossing animated film in history.
